How to Track Your Training on a GLP-1 (So You Know You're Keeping Strength)

The short answer: track strength, not just weight. Log your top set on a few main lifts each week and compare that trend with your scale weight. If your weight drops and your top sets hold, that's a good sign. Resistance training helps preserve strength during weight loss. Raise any ongoing fatigue with your doctor.

GLP-1 medicines are approved to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity (Wegovy label, Zepbound label). This guide is about the training side: what to write down, and how to read it. For what the research says about fat and lean mass, see are GLP-1 drugs worth it if you lift?

Why the scale isn't enough

When you're losing weight, the scale only tells you the total. It can't tell you whether you're losing fat, water or muscle.

Your lifts can help fill that gap. Both endurance and resistance exercise help preserve muscle during weight loss, but resistance training also improves strength. If you're getting lighter and your strength is holding, that's useful information you won't get from the scale.

What to track

Keep it small, so you actually keep doing it.

1. Two to four main lifts. Pick lifts you do every week, like a squat, a press, a pull and a hinge. The exact lifts matter less than doing the same ones consistently.

2. Your top set on each. The heaviest working set of the session, with weight and reps.

3. How hard it felt. A word like easy or grindy, or an RPE number like @8. See how to log RPE.

4. Your scale weight, once a week. Same day, same time.

5. A short note when something's off. Low energy, poor sleep, missed meals.

Worked example

Here's an example of what six weeks might look like. These numbers are made up for illustration. They're not trial data.

Week 1

Mon: Squat 3x5 @ 80kg, solid
Bodyweight 92 kg

Week 6

Mon: Squat 3x5 @ 80kg, felt ok
Bodyweight 88 kg

In this example, bodyweight is down 4 kg and the squat top set hasn't moved. That's the pattern you're hoping for: the scale going down while strength holds.

If week 6 instead read Squat 3x5 @ 70kg, very tired, with the weight on the bar dropping week after week, that's worth a closer look, and worth mentioning to your doctor.

How to read the trend

Look at several weeks, not one session. One bad day doesn't mean anything. A slide over three or four weeks does.

Compare like with like. Same lift, same reps. A top set of 5 isn't comparable with a top set of 8.

Holding is a win. While you're losing weight, keeping the same numbers on the bar is a good result. You don't need a new PR every week.

Check your volume too. If you want a wider view than top sets, add up sets × reps × kg for the week with our free weekly volume calculator and compare it with previous weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if I'm losing muscle on a GLP-1?

You can't tell from the scale alone. Log your top sets each week. If your weight drops and your strength holds, that's a good sign. If strength keeps sliding, talk to your doctor.

What should I track when lifting on Ozempic or Mounjaro?

A top set on two to four main lifts each week, how hard it felt, and your weekly scale weight. Add a short note when energy, sleep or food is off.

How often should I lift while losing weight on a GLP-1?

There's no single number that suits everyone. Choose a schedule you can keep up week after week, and check with your doctor that it's right for you. Consistency is what makes your log useful.

Why am I tired at the gym on a GLP-1?

Fatigue is a listed side effect on the Wegovy label and can make training harder. If it keeps happening, tell your doctor.

Write it how you'd say it

You don't need a spreadsheet for this. In Twaka, you write the session in plain English, like Squat 3x5 @ 80kg, felt ok, and Twaka keeps the history of every lift so you can see the trend. It's an iPhone training tracker on the App Store. Download Twaka on the App Store.

Keep your training log in plain English

Twaka is a training tracker for iPhone. You write "3 sets of 10 at 60kg" and it keeps the sets, weights and progress for you. It's on the App Store.
